Bittersweet

I was an only child, adopted at birth. Driven by a misguided desire to keep me safe, my parents isolated me from the world. School aside, i remained largely alone, if not in the company of adults, until i rebelled at age fifteen. But patterns develop, habits die hard, and instinct is difficult to ignore. Rebellion, therefore, was short-lived. I live my life in self-imposed near-isolation, far, as they say, from the madding crowd. This is why i once sabotaged an opportunity to appear in more films, and why, two years back, i declined the chance to publish a novel or autobiography. I tell you this so you might understand what was going through my head when i happened upon Lonesome Town, an aching reminder of all that was bad and good about my life in the 50s.

TinyLittlePenis

Let me repeat this once more for the nosebleed seats.....

What's up with you guys who cruise around in your wheels with the speakers of your uber sound system blaring? First, you're annoying the piss outta me. Second, most of the ladies do not think it cool -- basically all you're attracting are other equally immature men and early onset hearing loss. Third, you won't be able to hear the sirens rollin' behind as you speed away from the ice cream man. Fourth, all the cranked-up bass in the world isn't going to make up for your tiny little penis. So quit it.

As for you gals who do likewise, keep on doin' it. Generally, you're skimming the guys the rest of us don't want and leaving us the cream.

And yes, I realize i'm a cranky old broad. DGF. Sideways, yo.

Anti-Reducible

Years ago, i read that "a lifestyle is reducible to the sum of its parts, while a life is not. If you believe that freedom is merely the ability to select from an infinite variety of packaged choices, then an agreeable lifestyle is all you need." A seeming foretelling of our new uber-social web, don't you think?

Life: Opt In!

Wish i had saved the article's permalink, but i saved the part that counts....

"More and more, society is using generic products for emotional matters. And although generic products might be a bargain when it comes to medicine or food, they are a shoddy substitute when it comes to relationships. Affection has to be real. Mimicry won't do. So I am so discouraged when I see a growing dependence on generic affection. When I see the philosophy of generics sneaking up on us so silently, so stealthily, so insidiously, that we don't even know it is happening. And then, before we realize it, this attitude of economizing begins to overlap where it doesn't belong. And soon, whether as self-protectionism, or whether out of ignorance, we stroll through life economizing emotional participation in our personal relationships. Reducing direct involvement until all we give to one another is a generic substitute for the real thing."
